Just got the new Pioneer DDJ-RX with a copy of Rekordbox DJ and thought I would write a little about it and ask anyone else what their thoughts are.
Well I got it yesterday and had my first real go tonight and I have to say, I am VERY IMPRESSED.
Now don’t mistake me for a semi pro who DJs every week in clubs or bars etc… I am only a home DJ but have been doing it for almost 15 years. Started as everyone should, on belt drive vinyl decks and then progressed onto a pair of Vestax PDX 2000s, then some Stanton CDJs and then eventually onto Serato and now Rekordbox. I’d say Ive done my time learning and now am having a go at digital DJ’ing.
SO the DDJ-RX… its as you would expect from pioneer its amazing! its well made, responsive and very fun!!!
Everything from the RGB pads to the feel of the jog wheel is just perfect. Its going to take me a little while to be able to beat match on it like I can on vinyl decks but I don’t think it will take long to grasp it.
The only negative comment I have so far is the pitch fader. Although its perfectly responsive and accurate it glides easily so the slightest unwanted touch could send you track out of sync. I’m used to using vestal or technics where the pitch fader has take a bit of strength to move, but with time again I think its something you could get used to.
Im trying to master beat matching on it without having to look at the screen at all because I want that ability rather than relying on the softwares features although it is hard not to check where the BPM is or even what percentage the pitch is on.
All in all I think anyone from from vinyl or CDJs would be happy with this unit, its got a lot of features and the fact that the rekordbox software matches the controller exactly makes the marriage even more beautiful lol.
Anyone else got any tips or noticed anything that annoys them maybe?
Well clearly there have been “exact” matches between controllers and software for many years, all Traktor controllers for example, Serato controllers from the early days and “designed for Serato” controllers from more recent date.
So in and of itself that is neither impressive nor unique to me.
I think it’s great for all DJs that grew up with the Pioneer logo burnt in their foreheads 😀 . They can now go fully digital without being unfaithful to the brand.
What I have seen so far of the software is promising, but it is also not nearly as finished a product as Traktor, Serato, Cross or VDJ. Many features are still missing. They are on the roadmap for 2016, but still.
The controller isn’t all that special imho, it’s pretty much a DDJ-SX2. Not a bad thing as that is a good controller, which works seamlessly with Serato (designed for after all) but equally well with Cross (my poison of choice).
So, long story short, I have no need to change at the moment. Nothing out there with such improvements that it would make me change my current workflow or switch my software. Not saying that might not change in the future, but it could just as easily be a new version of Serato.
Keep an eye on the blog/website as a DDJT review is in the making or so I understand.
I’ve been playing with this for the past couple of days and its a nice bit of kit. Cant figure out the sampler though :/
Where did you guys get your DDJ-RX from? I pre-ordered one pretty early and I’m still being told I won’t have mine until early December. Just curious… I can’t wait to get mine!
It’s in stock here in The Netherlands (Bax-Shop web shop).
Got the RX myself today, lovely piece of kit, looks great and very responsive. Will a take a while to get use to it and Rekordbox but so far I’m loving it.
I’ve just spent the last 2 hours playing on the DDJ-RX after a long night of setting and fiddling around with it, it wasn’t as bad as I thought. I’ve used Traktor for years so I was a bit worried about jumping straight into Rekordbox never having used it before but I was quite surprised at how easy it is.
The controller itself is just brilliant, the build quality is excellent, I’m really loving the jog wheels, they’re extremely responsive. Everything is well laid out, it’s just jammed packed with features and I’m sure I’ll still be finding something new I can do on it over the coming weeks. It looks the part too, especially when it’s powered up and running 🙂
Rekordbox itself, I have to say it’s a great system. There’s plenty on features there for everyone, with it working along with the RX controller it’s flawless and extremely responsive. The only minor thing I have an issue with at the moment is the pitch control/master tempo sync, it’s not quite as refined as that on Traktor but I’m sure that will be tweaked somewhere down the line with an update or Plus Pack.
Overall I’m well impressed with it and I couldn’t be happier, it’s a serious piece of kit and for the money it costs it’s an absolute bargain.
Hey, I’m thinking of getting a DDJ-RX, with Rekordbox DJ… but i still have one question : are beat effects post-fader ? Because i saw a demo on the DDJ-RZ where the spiral effect was indeed post effect but is it the case for all effects that have a tail (echo, reverb…) on precisely the DDJ-RX ?
I guess it should be the same but I just want to make sure.
And what about colour effects ?Thank you !
I know the DDJ-SZ did NOT have post-fader beat FX (due to the nature of the routing in the controller). The DDJ-SX and SX2 do have post-fader beat FX.
Not sure how it is for the RX and RZ.
There’s the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9goBsyErCQ at 21:50.
You can see the spiral effect being post fader.
I hope that since FX sections are identical on the DDJ-RZ/DDJ-RX it would work the same way, and that this post fader effect doesn’t only apply to a few effects like spiral but to all that can !
